The Misconception About College Education

Have you heard people repeating over and over that you don’t need to go to college to be successful in life?

Well in this new era that is correct you don’t need a college degree to have a successful life. The internet has given people the power to become entrepreneurs and do things they really enjoy doing. For example, they can live stream online games with twitch and create a community of followers who enjoy watching you play. Then that’s when you can start monetizing what once was your hobby is now your full-time job and the best of all is that you enjoy doing it. We must realize society has changed in the last decade, what was seen impossible before, now we see it not being, so impossible anymore. We can achieve anything we want if we apply self-discipline and consistency in our life equation. I have friends and colleagues that argue that you don’t need to go to college to be successful. In fact, they are right, but not everyone can afford not to go to college. Many people make that hard-financial investment to attend college because they see it as having a better chance to getting out of poverty. According to USA Today an article written by Samuel Stebbins and Thomas C. Frohlich, https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2019/11/06/united-states-poverty-rate-for-every-group/40546247/ poverty rate in the United States in 2018, by education, people not having a high school diploma 25.9% of the country population are in poverty, People who only graduate from high school 12.7% of the country population are in poverty, and for people with a bachelor’s degree or higher 4.4% of the country population are in poverty. According to census.gov https://www.census.gov/popclock/ that was done on August 6, 2020 the United State population is about 330,074,697. If we break down the percentages and write it in numbers, this is what it is going to look like. The population living in poverty with no high school diploma is about 85,489,346.523, with high school diploma is about 41,919,486.519, and with a bachelor’s degree is about 14,523,286.668. This is a demonstration that even if you do decide to go to college you are not guaranteed to be successful and out of the poverty line, but also not having a college degree makes your odds of getting out of poverty  very low. Education is a choice you can either teach yourself and create something that would allow your hobby to become your career or go to college to learn a career, neither or would guarantee your success in life. What would increase your odds of being successful in life is having self-discipline and being consistent in anything you do. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr once said “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education”. This is something you must decide on which path is worth your time and energy, not everyone is the same and that’s ok.

I want to hear your thoughts💭 on education and poverty. What do you think can be done differently to help those who are living on the poverty line?
