Fixed mindset vs Growth mindset

Two mindsets that shape our lives.

In this post we're going to go over two mindsets that shape our lives which are called: fixed mindset and growth mindset. The growth mindset is what you need to have to improve your life goals and grow as a person. We are going to identify if you have a fixed mindset and how you can shift that to a growth mindset. The mindset is a book written by Carol S Dweck, Ph.D. a psychology professor at Stanford University. She studies the motivation in people, why people succeed or not and what is in our control to have the encouragement to succeed. In her study she comes up with a theory of the two mindsets and how different they are.

As she describes, "her work bridges developmental psychology, social psychology, and personality psychology, and examines the self-conceptions (or mindsets) people use to structure the self guide their behavior. Her research looks at the origins of the mindsets, their role in motivation and self-regulation, and their impact on achievement and interpersonal process."  In the book she explains how someone with a fixed mindset is often worried about what others would think of them. Always trying to prove themselves in every aspect of life in a classroom, in their relationships, and in a work environment. Looking for people's confirmation of their intelligence, personality or character. They are also constantly evaluating every situation of their life and worrying about other people's perception of themselves. In the book she also talks about how someone with a fixed mindset has trouble learning how to forgive. A fixed mindset person tends to be full of anger and blame themselves for the things that happened to them. Letting go of things and learning how to forgive, gives you a sense of peace and being able to think of the things that really matter to you.

"No matter what happens, it is within my power to turn it to my advantage."

In the other hand the growth mindset believes that no matter what happen in life, couldn't go to a prestige college, financial background, or ethnicity. Those are just the starting point for growth and development. The growth mindset believes that basic qualities are things that you can cultivate with hard work and dedication. Carol S Dweck, Ph.D. said, "Why hide deficiencies instead of overcoming them? Why look for friends or partners who will just shore up your self-esteem instead of ones who will also challenge you to grow? And why seek out the tried and true, instead of experiences that will stretch you? The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives."

"It's your reaction to adversity, not adversity itself that determine how your life's story will develop"

                                                                        Dieter F. Uchtdorf

If you are looking for a change it's very important that you understand both mindsets. This can help you identify yourself and understand what you need to do to change those behaviors that don't let you grow even further. Understanding these mindsets you will see how one thing leads to another. How a belief of a fixed mindset makes you think that your future is set in stone that leads to a host thoughts of actions, and how a belief of a growth mindset helps the quality of your life that can lead you to host thoughts of actions taking you to a very different path. This book teach us how we can convert life setbacks into future success. How someone with a growth mindset need to have resilience, patient, self-confidence, and desire to improve themselves.

I suggested reading this book, it will definitely help you learn more about yourself as it did for me.
